Halo 5 Mythic Difficulty Guide - MISSION 14: The Breaking

The Tru7h About The Breaking

Rating: Medium

Type: Promethean-Only

Why on earth 343 would do this is beyond me. Picture this. The mission "The Library" from Halo: Combat Evolved, but replace the terrifying Flood with lifeless, annoying robots. Add to that even more gating in the form of having to kill every enemy in the area before you can advance, and you have this mission in a nutshell. It's not that it's bad or even that it's difficult. It's just boring. It's a mindless slog through a bunch of lifeless robots that culminates into one of the most disappointing mission endings since "The Great Journey" cliffhanger in Halo 2. It's a robot shooting gallery with a twist ending that leaves the player both angry and disappointed. Still, the visuals are impressive, and the last few minutes do get rather exciting before the cutscene. So let's dive right into the fray and fight some robots.

Getting the Band Back Together

Looking on the bright side, we're joining Blue Team again on their epic journey, even if it is the last time we'll be playing as the Master Chief in the game. After Cortana rips the Warden away from you, it's time to move forward. Since you're equipped with only an Assault Rifle and Magnum, you'll of course want to upgrade your choice of weaponry rather quickly. Especially given that this is a mission containing only Promethean enemies. To that end, I would recommend arming both yourself and your allies with Suppressors as soon as the opportunity presents itself while keeping your secondary weapon as a Bolt Shot. You'll also want to trade out your Suppressor for a Light Rifle further down the road, so when you come across one, take it. But also be sure to use your Light Rifle ammo VERY sparingly as they can be hard to come across in the most critical of moments.

Beyond the above, it's hard to say much else here other than what's in the actual video. It's a simple game of moving up a few feet, fighting the enemies, moving up a few more feet, and rinse and repeat. You'll want to make sure all three of your teammates are up and at 'em at all times given that the three continuous streams of Suppressor fire they provide will make this all go much smoother and faster.

The first couple of waves will be nothing but Crawlers. Take them out and move on through. The second wave will consist of Soldiers and a pair of Watchers. Make the Watchers your top priority here, and move up one of the side ramps to gain the high ground over the Soldiers below. Be aware, however, that there will be a trio of Crawlers guarding both of the ramps. After you've destroyed them all, scavenge around for a Light Rifle and additional ammo. The final area of this first platform will a few Soldiers along with two normal Promethean Knights. These Knights differ, though, given that they're both wielding Incineration Cannons as opposed to Scattershots. Make the Knights your top priority once again by targeting their weak spots under the arms followed by a solid face shot. Finally, go ahead and mop up the last of the Soldiers, and save the last one for getting your shields back via melee. Once you're done, there will be Promethean weapons crates near the exit, so treat yourself to some additional ammo before you ride the lift up to the next platform and talk to Cortana along the way.

The second area switches things up a bit with a multi-level platform system. On the first level, you'll be dealing with a mob of Crawlers with two Soldier Captains wielding Splinter Turrets on the ramps leading to the second floor. Take out the Crawlers that are a bit to eager to have their faces blown off before concentrating on the Captains. Once the Captains have been taken out, mop up the rest of the Crawlers before heading up the ramp to the second floor. It's worth noting here that each ramp has a weapon cache consisting of one Incineration Cannon which can be handy when dealing with the Focus Turrets on the top floor.

The second floor consists of only Crawlers, so again this is pretty straight forward. Send in your allies armed with Suppressors to do most of the dirty work while you stay behind and mop up the remains. Be careful while heading up the ramp, however, as a pair of eager Soldier Captains with Scattershots will be waiting for you. Send your team ahead just to be safe, and don't be afraid to backpedal if they start to give chase.

With the Soldiers down, you can proceed to the third floor which is divided into two separate sections. The first of which only contains a pair of Focus Turrets. I tend to take them out by standing on the ramps beneath them for cover. You can use the Incineration Cannons if you'd like, but it's just as easy to fire two Light Rifle shots into their respective cores just before they fire on you. In fact, I'd say it's even easier. After both Turrets have been destroyed, it's time to move through the door and into the final area of this particular platform.

This two-level place is PACKED with Soldiers. In terms of your high-priority enemies, the two Snipers on the ground level will be the ones you want to deal with first. There are also three Captains on the upper level (one in the center and two on the sides), and they will be guarded by a pair of Watchers as well. There are several more Soldiers stationed on both levels, but the enemies listed above need to be taken out first. Especially since the Captains all have Splinter Turrets. You can take down all of the above enemies (except for the remaining Soldiers) from the safety of the tunnel entrance that brought you to the area to begin with.

Once the most dangerous enemies have have been cleared, it's time to step out into the open. Send your squad over to fight any of the Soldiers on the ground level while making a mad dash for the tunnel on the opposite side. Either of the two entrances are fine, but I typically like to take the one on the right. Which ever way you go, make sure the firefight is trained on your team and not you. You and your allies can fight out the rest of the ground level forces here before advancing to the second floor and doing the same. Again, paint one target at a time for your friends to make this go by easier and quicker. After all of the Soldiers are finally dead, you'll finally get permission to ride to the third and final platform.

As with the first platform, this one is yet another long, extended walkway with ramps. The first enemies you encounter here will be a large group of Soldiers. You should know the drill at this point. Paint each target one at a time for your allies, have them retreat during Splinter Grenade spams, and rinse and repeat until every Soldier is dead. Move up towards the ramps where you'll be confronted by a pair of Focus Turrets in the between the ramps along with a pair of Soldier Captains with Splinter Turrets. Deal with the Turrets first just like you did with the ones from the previous platform via the Light Rifle, then focus on the Captains while continuing to dodge their mortars. Heading up the ramp, there will be two normal Soldiers on each side. Whichever ramp you take, I recommend blowing up both Soldiers, than retreating down, traveling up the other ramp, and doing the same.

Keep moving forward. You're almost there! On each side of the walkway will be a pair of Soldier Captains, and in the middle will be a horde of Crawlers. Deal with the Captains first using the same method you used on the previous four Soldiers, then deal with the Crawlers. Again, let your allies do most of the work here.

The final section of the walkway is where things start to get dangerous. You'll be dealing with SIX Sniper Soldiers as they provide support for two Knight Commanders with Incineration Cannons! Snipe the Soldier from afar. There will be three on each side of the room towards the back of the area. Only when all six are down should you engage the Knights. Don't panic. These really aren't any more challenging than the ones you fought earlier, save for the fact that they have slightly more health. Just like before, target their weak spots under their arms, then go for the face. After they've been decimated, you'll be allowed to proceed.

The Warden is now freaking out. How DARE you get this close to Cortana! Don't worry. Even though the triple Warden fight seems intimidating, it's also very skipable. Rush into the room just in time to see SEVERAL Wardens spawn on the other side in an attempt to bring your progress to a sudden halt, only to have Cortana wipe out all but three of them. Do NOT hesitate here! Rush to the right side of the area where you'll find a launch cannon. Sprint and Dash into the cannon, and turn and focus on the upper platform where the Wardens were standing before jumping down to face you. Then Ground Pound to the platform and walk straight through the exit to the end of the mission.

Yes, it's that simple! You don't even have to fight the Wardens at all! Definitely give the video a watch for a visual reference, but congratulations! You now only have one mission left to go.
