There IS a BR in ODST!
ArteenEsben noticed a Battle Rifle in Halo 3: ODST - no, you can't play with it (it shows up only in a cutscene), but given the uproar from the fans when it was made clear that the BR wouldn't be present in ODST, I'm thinking this HAS to be an easter egg. You can see stills of it in this post, but you should watch the cutscene if you want to see it in motion.
