Chief continued sniping after the explosion. Some spotted him, and Chief ran back to a building. He got in the Ghost, and started the engine. He drove at full speed back to the forest. He got there in 15 minutes, and found a narrow path in the forest. The Ghost barely fit. Chief kept driving for another three minutes, before arriving at a clearing. His Warthog was parked near a tree.
Chief got out of the Ghost and ran over to his Warthog. He grabbed some clips of ammo that were lying in the back, then got in the driver's seat. He turned the 'Hog around and looked across the clearing, and caught a glimpse of movement. He peered closer, and saw what it was. Chief floored it across the clearing, and about ten combat form Flood rushed out, only to be obliterated by the 'Hog's front bumper. One had jumped out of the way, however. Chief jumped out of the seat, and got on the back. He aimed the machine gun at the Flood, and fired, tearing it apart. It was a good thing he was using the machine gun, because tons of Flood rushed out of the forest afterwards. Chief turned and fired, and saw green blood and pieces of flesh fly. One threw a plasma grenade at the 'Hog, but just missed Chief's head. Chief picked up a frag grenade that was lying in the back and threw it into the pile of Flood corpses, blowing them apart. He wanted to make sure those bastards were dead.
"Banshee incoming!" Cortana yelled. Chief looked upwards, spotting the Banshee. He aimed the machine gun and fired, taking down the Banshee in seconds.
"I was starting to miss that voice," Chief said.
"I was trying to hack into Covenant files," Cortana said. "Not too much though, I only found out how much it costs for a gallon of food nipple beverage."
"I wonder what happened to that Grunt," Chief said, recalling the last Grunt he heard speak on Halo.
"I'll keep trying to find information, there has to be something useful," Cortana said.
"Alright, keep me informed," Chief replied as he fired at a few more enemies. He waited a few moments before crawling off the back, assault rifle aimed at the bushes. He got back in driver's seat, and wondered what to do. He thought about the Longsword, and thought maybe he should restock on supplies, unless the Longsword was destroyed. He still had a lot of supplies though. His question was answered by Cortana, with startling information.
"I found out something rather interesting," she said. "There is a prison nearby, holding four Marines."
"What?!" Chief said. "Where?"
"I'll give you a nav point on your HUD," she replied. Red arrows pointed, showing a distance of 30 kilometres.
"I have to save them," Chief said.
"I thought you might say that," Cortana said as Chief turned the 'Hog towards the nav point, and stepped on the pedal. The 'Hog lurched forward through the foliage. Chief activated the long-range motion detector on the 'Hog. No enemies were showing up on the detector for a five kilometre radius. Chief kept driving for another 10 minutes, bumping up and down over rocks and fallen branches.
The forest was dark, the canopy did not want to let the light in. Soon hundreds or dots appeared, as Chief neared the prison. He wondered if the Flood had taken the prison. He kept driving, and heard gunfire in the distance. He was getting close. He parked the 'Hog near a tree, and took out his assault rifle. He ran through the bushes, and kept watch of his motion detector. He was almost at the prison. He ran up a small hill, and looked down at the prison.
He saw plasma flying through the air at all angles. The Flood and Covenant were having another fight. Chief ran down the hill, straight at the prison. There weren't too many enemies, and he thought they'd be more concerned with each other. He took out his plasma sniper rifle, and searched the battleground. He looked over to the other sides, away from the battle. He saw a faint green glow. He zoomed closer, and saw active camouflage. Perfect, he thought.
He ran around to the other side, and then ran at the prison. He watched closely. There might have been an invisible Elite. He saw no ripples in the air, and ran in, picking up the camouflage and activating it. He looked down at himself, and could only see a faint trace. He ran around the prison again, back to the battle. He made sure to stay away from plasma fire. He came up to a Gold Elite, and meleed it in the back, killing it. He saw Elites streaming through an open door. He ran up to it, and tossed a frag grenade, sending a few Elites flying through the doorway. He ran in during the confusion.
"Cortana," he whispered. "Where are the Marines?"
"Turn left at the first corridor, then right at the next. You'll come up to them eventually," she replied.
Chief walked down the hallway, and saw the first corridor. He ran through, until coming up to another corridor that led to the right. He turned down it, and ran for another 20 seconds, before coming to a cell. In it were the Marines. "Cortana, deactivate those plasma bars."
"Done," Cortana said a moment later, and Chief watched as the bars disintegrated. The Marines looked a little surprised.
"Marines!" Chief said. They all looked up, and had a look of confusion as they could not see the Chief. Chief deactivated the camouflage. They looked at the Spartan, wide-eyed.
"Are you a....a Spartan?" one asked.
"Yes I am. I crashed here, but I have no time for explanation right now. We have to get the hell out of here," Chief said. "Did they keep your uniforms?" he added, taking note that they only wore ragged t-shirts and shorts.
"Yes they did," another said. "In those lockers, right behind you."
Chief turned, and saw some odd-looking storage units. He kicked them open. He took a uniform out and looked at it. "Which one of you is Private Smith?" he asked. A skinny, tall, bald Marine stood up, saluting Chief. Chief returned the salute, and threw him the uniform. "Who is Private Wallace?"
"I am, sir," a muscular, brown haired man said as he saluted. Chief handed him the uniform and returned the salute.
"Private Mann," Chief said. A short, blonde haired Marine stood up, saluted the Chief, and took the uniform. "And you must be Sargeant Anderson," Chief said, looking at a stocky black haired man. Anderson saluted, and took the uniform.
You can use this sniper rifle for now, Sargeant," Chief said, taking out the sniper rifle and handing it to Anderson.
Anderson took the rifle, and looked at it. "Thanks," he said. "And you can use this pistol, Wallace," Chief said, throwing him the pistol.
"This won't be an easy escape, Marines. We're gonna have to run fast. I'm sure you can make it, though. I'll lead, and take out as many enemies before they can see me. Let's go!" Chief ran down the corridors, Marines close behind. He saw an Elite at the door, firing at Flood. Chief ran up and meleed him to death. He fired his rifle at some Grunts and Jackals, cutting them down. The Marines ran out, Sarge firing the rifle, and Smith taking down a couple of Grunts with his pistol. "Run Marines, run!" Chief yelled, standing in front of them and taking the blows with his shield. They ran up the hill, Chief close behind. Chief's shield was low, but the Flood and Covenant were fighting each other again. Chief ran, and easily caught up to the Marines.
They reached the 'Hog, and Chief started the engine. Mann got on the back, handling the machine gun. Sarge sat in the side, Smith squeezed in beside him, and Wallace sat on the back, holding tightly to an object, while aiming the pistol with his other hand. Chief floored it, driving away from the prison. Chief explained what happened during the ride, but had to tell certain parts over because of the noise. Chief was driving back to the Longsword, where the Marines could get supplies. They came across Flood a few times, but they either got ran down or gunned down. They drove across the field where Chief had encountered his first enemies. The destroyed Banshee and Ghost still lay there, along with Covenant bodies. They drove over the rise, and Chief spotted 'Kamamee's corpse, and the downed dropship. Chief steered away from the dropship, and drove into the forest again. Stray combat forms ran into the path, and Mann tore them to pieces with machine gun fire. Anderson threw a grenade which Chief had given him, and destroyed several more. One jumped up and landed on Smith's head.
"AHH!" he screamed, trying to knock it off. Chief took out a plasma grenade and stuck it on the ex-Elite's face, then grabbed its arm and threw it high into the air, and a huge blue explosion blew it to pieces. Anderson fired the sniper rifle, picking off three of them, and Mann finished the rest off. Chief kept going, and spotted a huge grey object in the distance.
"Is that the bird you came in on?!" Wallace yelled.
"Yep," Chief said. They soon reached it, and Chief drove up to the back. Wallace got out, and lowered the ramp. He ran inside, and Chief drove in, and Wallace closed the entrance again.
Chief led them to weapons storage, where he grabbed some new clips of ammo. Anderson grabbed an assault rifle and sniper rifle, Mann grabbed a pistol and shotgun, Wallace grabbed a rocket launcher and pistol, and Smith got an assault rifle and pistol. They all grabbed eight frag grenades. Chief got 20.
They decided to stay and rest, Mann would take the first watch. He sat in the control room and watched for enemies on the motion tracker. Chief was surprised the damn thing still operated. He was eager to go to sleep. He saluted the rest of the Marines, and headed to a bunk.
